Hard water in Bexar County: what it does to your pipes
Edwards Aquifer water is clean, safe — and very hard. What 15+ grains per gallon quietly does to heaters, fixtures, and appliances.
San Antonio sits on the Edwards Aquifer — limestone country. The water that comes out of it is clean and safe, but it carries a heavy load of dissolved calcium and magnesium. On the hardness scale, most of Bexar County lands in the "very hard" range: 15 to 20 grains per gallon, several times what's considered soft.
Where the minerals end up
Every gallon that passes through your home leaves a little of that limestone behind — always where heat or turbulence is highest:
- Water heaters. Scale settles on the tank floor and heating elements. It insulates the burner from the water, so the heater runs longer, costs more, and dies younger.
- Fixtures and valves. The white crust on your shower head is the visible part. The same buildup is happening inside cartridge valves, fill valves, and dishwasher solenoids.
- Tankless units. These are especially sensitive — the narrow heat-exchanger passages scale shut. Manufacturers in our area recommend a descale flush every single year.
- Appliances. Dishwashers and washing machines in hard-water homes typically give up two to four years early.
Hard water rarely bursts a pipe. It just quietly shortens the life of everything the water touches.
What actually helps
A whole-home water softener exchanges the calcium and magnesium for a trace of sodium before the water enters your plumbing. Heaters stay clean, fixtures stop crusting, soap actually lathers. If you dislike the slick feel of softened water at the kitchen tap, a small reverse-osmosis unit under the sink handles drinking water separately.
